The framework of reciprocal tariff adjustment between China and the US officially took effect at the end of September 2026, making toys one of the light industrial categories that benefit directly from the policy. According to industry estimates, previously Chinese toy exports to the US generally faced an additional 7.5%-25% tariff. After this adjustment, over 90% of toy products on the list will return to MFN tariff rates, directly reducing the landed cost of exports.
As the largest toy industrial cluster in China, Chenghai, Shantou in Guangdong (accounting for over 50% of national plastic toy output and about one third of global capacity) has been the first to feel the positive impact of the policy. Representatives from Chenghai Toy Association stated that the tariff cut affects the industry across cost, orders and channels: the released profit margin can either be used to improve terminal price competitiveness, or directly increase enterprise gross margins, repairing the profit space previously suppressed by inflation and trade barriers.
Coinciding with the Q4 Christmas and Thanksgiving stock-up peak, the tariff reduction is expected to drive the release of supplementary order demand in the US market, especially benefiting medium-sized foreign trade factories with stable customer resources.
Entering October, Christmas-themed dolls and plush toys have reached their annual shipping peak, with factories in major domestic toy industrial clusters generally operating at full production capacity. According to October supply data from B2B platforms such as 1688 and Alibaba International, search volume and inquiry volume of Christmas reindeer, Santa Claus and Christmas tree shaped plush toys have increased by over 40% month-on-month compared to September, and the proportion of low MOQ, multi-batch repeat orders has increased significantly.
Two core trends have emerged in this year's overseas Christmas orders:
1.Rising share of customized demand: Overseas brands and retailers prefer exclusive IP custom and brand logo customized differentiated products to avoid homogeneous price competition. Factories with rapid sampling capability are more favored.
2.More small-batch flexible orders: Affected by the adjustment of overseas inventory strategies, large bulk orders have decreased, and small and medium batch repeat orders of 500-2000 pieces have become the mainstream, putting forward higher requirements for production flexibility and delivery efficiency of factories.
Leading plush toy enterprises in Shandong, Yangzhou and other regions reported that export value of dolls in the first 10 months of this year increased by over 25% year-on-year. Currently, production of Christmas orders has entered the final stage, and some factories have started to accept sampling orders for new products for Easter and Valentine's Day 2027.
The 23rd CTE China Toy Fair will be held at Shanghai New International Expo Center from October 21 to 23, 2026, gathering more than 2,000 exhibitors and tens of thousands of professional overseas buyers from 41 countries and regions around the world. It is the most important trade matching platform for the toy industry in the fourth quarter.
According to industry insights released in advance by the organizer, the scale of China's art collectible toy market has exceeded 60 billion yuan in 2026, with an annual growth rate of nearly 50%, and assembled collectible toys have become the fastest growing segment. In the corresponding foreign trade market, overseas demand for collectible dolls and IP-licensed figures remains strong, with premium ability significantly higher than ordinary basic toys.
For foreign trade factories, the core opportunity at this exhibition lies in: overseas buyers focus on suppliers with original design capabilities, complete compliance certifications (EN71/ASTM), and support for small-batch customization. Enterprises that lay out IP co-branded and limited-edition products in advance will be more likely to obtain large orders.
Combined with October industry dynamics and first-half export data, China's toy and doll industry is at a key node of structural upgrading:
Market structure differentiation: Price competition for traditional basic toys intensifies, while original IP, intelligent interactive and collectible products maintain high growth, and the overseas revenue proportion of leading enterprises continues to rise.
Rising compliance threshold: Toy safety regulations in the EU and North American markets continue to tighten. Material testing, traceability systems and environmental requirements have become standard access for foreign trade factories. Enterprises that lay out compliance in advance will gain first-mover advantage.
Diversified channels: In addition to traditional offline wholesale channels, toy sales on emerging channels such as Amazon independent stations, social commerce Temu and TikTok Shop are growing rapidly, driving factories to transform from pure OEM to ODM + brand services.
