Custom Plush Keychain Design Brief: What to Send Before Sampling

Before asking a manufacturer to sample a custom plush keychain, prepare a short brief covering the character artwork, finished size, important facial details, attachment preferences and quantity per design. You do not need to choose every fabric or solve the sewing construction yourself. Clearly mark what is fixed, what is flexible and what needs a recommendation.

This guide is for brands and IP owners developing keychains for a production order. Its purpose is to make the first design discussion more specific, rather than treat a concept image as a complete manufacturing specification.

1. Show the character and identify what must stay

Send the clearest front view you have. Add side and back views when available, especially if the design has a tail, a hairstyle, clothing or markings that continue around the body. If those views do not exist, say so and ask which missing details need to be developed before sampling.

Mark the features that define the character: for example, an uneven smile, the shape of the eyes or a particular ear position. Separate your own design from reference images used only to explain texture or style. Supply artwork you own or are authorized to use, and keep logos in a separate clear file when possible.

2. Separate plush body size from the complete keychain

“A small keychain” is not a measurable specification. Mark the measurement points on the drawing and state whether the size includes ears, hair, hats or other projecting features. Record the plush body dimensions separately from the assembled length including the loop and hardware. Add width or depth if the charm needs to fit a retail display or packaging.

For a range with several characters, clarify whether you want every character to have the same body height or to look balanced as a collection. Those are different instructions. Ask the manufacturer to review how the chosen size affects the shape and smaller details before treating the dimensions as final.

3. Review the face at the intended product size

A face that looks clear on a large screen may be harder to reproduce on a small stuffed surface. Supply a close-up of the expression and identify which lines, gaps and color transitions matter most. Ask the manufacturer to compare suitable embroidery, printing or fabric-detail options for the actual artwork and material.

Do not approve a technique only because it looks good in a digital mockup. Use the sample to assess the expression, proportions and clarity. If a detail needs to change, request a marked comparison so you can decide whether the character still looks right. Avoid assuming there is one minimum line width that works for every fabric and design.

4. Explain how the attachment should work

Tell the factory whether the product is intended mainly for keys, a bag or a retail display. Share a reference for the preferred ring or clip, its finish and any size restrictions. Mark where you expect the plush to hang from, and ask the factory to review the connection as part of the construction.

During sample review, look at the complete keychain while it is hanging, not just the plush placed on a table. Check whether the face is visible, whether the hardware covers a feature and whether the arrangement matches the intended use. Appearance approval does not replace any product testing required for the actual market and intended users.

5. State quantities and packaging by design

List the intended quantity for each character or colorway instead of providing only a combined total. Tell the manufacturer which parts you hope to share across the collection, such as the body shape, attachment or packaging. Shared features may be worth reviewing, but they do not automatically mean the designs can share a pattern or the same unit price.

Include your packaging idea, labeling needs, destination market and desired arrival date. Distinguish that arrival date from the factory completion date. Leave undecided details open for discussion. Sampling fees, minimum quantities, production timing and shipping should be confirmed for the actual project rather than assumed from a general article.

A short brief you can copy

Use this as a starting point for an inquiry. Write “please recommend” where you need help; do not invent a specification just to fill every line.
